Jaipur : The Camel Rescue Centre (CRC) in Bassi celebrated its 13th anniversary today. This endeavour of Help in Suffering (HIS) which was established in 2011, offers vital veterinary care and sanctuary to camels, ensuring their health and the welfare of their devoted owners. With 2024 designated as the International Year of Camelids by the United Nations, highlighting the vital role these creatures play in human livelihoods and ecosystem sustainability, HIS's Camel Welfare Programme stands as a shining example. Their Camel Welfare Project implements direct interventions, community training, preventive measures, rescue and rehabilitation efforts, and hosting free treatment camps. With over 5000 camels treated annually through the Camel Welfare Programme, Help in Suffering (HIS) is making a significant impact in preserving the health and welfare of these vital animals.

Sharing more about this initiative, Managing Trustee of Help in Suffering, Timmie Kumar says: “Recognizing the dire need for veterinary services in remote areas, HIS embarked on a mission to build a Camel Rescue Centre and in 2011, with the support of the ELSU Foundation from Switzerland, the HIS Camel Rescue Centre (CRC) emerged in the village of Bassi, just 30 kilometers from Jaipur. This marked Jaipur's first specialized camel treatment hub, equipped to provide comprehensive care. Here, camels find solace and healing, with a dedicated resident veterinary surgeon and support staff. The CRC team also operates a mobile clinic to provide veterinary care and advice to camel owners in a large number of villages around Bassi.” Also present on the occasion was In Charge of Camel Rescue Center, Dr. Jitendra Jhingonia.

Some of the residents of Bassi Camel Rescue Centre include the 14-year-old blind camel Ranu, who is abandoned; Rani, once a circus star, now liberated from captivity, Blackie, a 14-year-old camel from Shahjahanpur, rescued while being smuggled for slaughter, among others.
